Exercise for older people – is there a ‘one size fits all’ approach?

If you’ve ever tried to search online for information on exercises for older people, you will know that there is an abundance of resources and advice out there. There are countless leaflets, exercise sheets, videos, blogs and websites that you may come across. Each of them has a different take on things, and it can often leave you feeling even more confused and overwhelmed, wondering “well which exercises are right for ME?!”. 

Lots of exercise programmes that are freely available are fairly low level. This is the nature of giving out exercises to suit a ‘one size fits all’ approach – they have to be suitable for the majority of the audience that they’re aimed at. These types of programmes often involve exercises you do whilst sitting in a chair, or lying on your bed. Whilst these exercises are certainly appropriate for certain people, the problem lies when people expect that these exercises will have a drastic improvement in their walking. If your goals are focussed around improving your walking, your balance, your endurance and your independence, chair based exercises alone just won’t cut it. 

At Extra Steps Physio, we do not believe in giving out generic leaflets or photocopies of generic exercise programmes – in fact, it’s our pet hate!
